Transform your bedroom in one day with these 10 easy steps.

Interior home (easy/ tips)

Transform your space!

Before:

After:

I did 10 simple and inexpensive things to spruce up my old drab bedroom. I needed a change. Since I spent a good majority of my time sleeping, watching TV and eating in my bedroom I wanted to upgrade it to have an extravagant look but not spend a lot.

1. Paint:

I was unimpressed with the drab tan color of the walls. In order to add a touch of color and lighten the whole room, I painted the walls a mint green. The mint green paint makes the room feel bigger and more homie. Dirt, surprisingly, dose not show on the walls.

If you go to Home Depot or Lowe’s you can check the clearance paint shelf for great finds, sometimes you can find cans of paint for $12!

Try one of these warm colors to turn your bedroom into a cozy getaway:

2. Moldings

To add a ritzy touch, I bought cheap floor boards and used them as celling moldings.

A 96-inch piece of molding is about $14. This is a great cheap investment. Ceiling molding will take your house’s look to the next level. Depending how much money you want to spend you can even invest in Crown molding. (See my molding section)

3. Scrub:

I cleaned all the white trim and door handles with Mr. Clean erasers and bleach.

4. Closet doors:

In my prior home to save money, I bought vinyl accordion closet doors.

There were some positives, the cost is low, the doors can be cut to size, and they are light weight. The negatives are the doors look cheap, they are held closed by a weak magnet and they fall apart. These doors lasted about six months before the vinyl started separating at the seams.

This time I splurged on the bi-fold white wood doors. I have had these doors for about a year now and I still love them. They look gorgeous and I have not had any issues with them.

5. Windows/ screens

I replaced all the old, thin, hole ridden window screens with charcoal fiberglass screens. This is very necessary. You want to be able to open your windows without insects flying into your home. I needed to replace all the screens in my house so I bought a roll of screen (about $73) but if you have screens with a small or large hole here and there you can buy a screen patch (about $7.50).

6. New bed frame:

I needed a new bedframe. The bed frame I had was eight years old, brown and bulky. I ordered a simple black (frame only no head board) 18 inches off the ground ($100) and a bed skirt ($15). What I love about this bed is the amount of storage underneath the bed. I am able to store 10 large bins under my bed. If you want a bed that also provides a lot of storage, considering purchasing this bed. Pair it with a bed skirt to hid what is stored under the bed.

7. Light switch covers:

I replaced all the broken light switch covers with new ones. Depending how many you need you may be able to get a discounted price. You can purchase a single light switch cover (.51 cents) or if you need a lot you can purchase a contractor’s bag of light switch covers ($7/ pack of 15). If your light switch covers are not cracked or chipped, you can pickup a pack of magic erasers and bleach and save even more money by cleaning the light switch covers you already have.

8. New Curtains & rods:

I bought some neutral gray, black out curtains and simple but elegant rods. Curtain rods can cost anywhere from $5 to $50+. Just because you want stylish curtain rods does not mean you have to pay $50. Search around for the best price rods. I suggest going to Walmart, Ross or Amazon to find the best-looking curtain rods at the lowest prices. A stylish rod should not cost you more than $20. Be sure to measure the area where you are going to put the rods, so you do not get rods that are too short. I have blackout curtains in my bedroom, which I love and strongly suggest you purchase. Depending on the length and width you need, curtains will be about $40. Before you purchase curtains check the package to see if there are one or two panels enclosed. I prefer the two-panel window. If you want to add an elegant touch, think about adding curtain holdbacks. Ranging from $4 to $25. Check out my blog “how to make your own curtain holdbacks” to save $$$$$.

9. New comforter & sheet set:

I bought beautiful new sheets and a matching comforter to compliment the bright new colors (king set $37).

10. A touch of you

To add a touch of my personality I mounted a gold bee above one closet and a gold dragon fly above the other. Shop around to find cute little art pieces for your wall.

If you need or want a change in your space, I suggest a quick room make over. Maybe you want to brighten the room with a splash of color or an art piece. If you want a change but do not have a lot of funds check out the salvation army, the Re-store, or Ross. These places always have gems hiding for less. Another great place to get cheap décor is the flea market or Facebook Market place. These options can be used to find anything new or used.  Normally the flea market is open early weekend mornings. Bring your binoculars because they have some great finds hiding. Facebook Market place has some great finds but sometimes trying to meet up with others can be impossible. One unexpected hot spot for DIY décor is The Dollar Tree. Over the past couple of years, The Dollar Tree has made a name for themselves as the DIYers dream come true. Best part is everything is $1.25!! Don’t be shy get creative with your space. 😊

I am so happy with the results; I have a new bedroom.
